Joshua Zirkzee scored a header in the second half that looked to have secured the win for United. However, Ryan Cherki was quicker than anyone to capitalise on an Onana error to level the scores.

Goalkeeper Onana made a mistake that allowed Lyon to open the scoring, then passed the ball to Ryan Cherki, who levelled the scores. In the first half, Thiago Almada took a lucky free-kick that beat Onana, but United soon restored parity. After the break, new striker Leni Joro scored his debut goal for the United team, levelling the scores again. Joshua Zirkzee put his team ahead late in the second half with a precise strike at the Lyon goal, which seemed to have secured the victory. But Cherki ended the match with a late second-half goal, leaving the intrigue ahead of the return leg at Old Trafford in Manchester next week in the Europa League quarter-finals.
